Recycling in public spaces and popular places
Today, a large part of all drinks sold in Sweden are consumed on the go. In the city, in the park or on the beach, there is a greater risk that one or another empty can and PET bottle will be forgotten or end up in the trash. So, where should the deposit can or bottle be left when it has been drunk outdoors? One solution could be a deposit tube. We want it to be easy to do the right thing, and it could hardly be easier.
The regulations that regulate
From 2024 onwards, the regulation SFS 2022:1274, on producer responsibility for packaging, will apply, which, among other things, highlights the importance of achieving material recycling targets and reducing littering.
Since 2024, the municipalities have been responsible for the collection of packaging waste from households and co-located businesses that have chosen municipal collection. The municipalities also collect packaging waste of all materials at a popular location, when the following three criteria are met:
- The location is a park or square that is larger than 2,000 square meters,
- The municipality is responsible for cleaning the location according to Section 2 of the Street Cleaning and Signage Act (1998:814).
- A lot of packaging waste is generated at the location.
We can offer the municipalities help in their work of producing easily accessible information for the public about how sorting should be done at popular locations. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has more information about packaging collection at popular locations where a lot of waste occur.
Offer to Swedish municipalities
What actually applies to the handling of deposits and other packaging collection at popular locations? What do these terms mean and how can we help municipalities solve deposit management?
Right now, we offer all municipalities in Sweden deposit tubes for the collection of bottles and cans with deposits. The deposit tube is installed on existing trash cans or other collection solutions for packaging waste in places where there is a lot of movement. We offer the deposit tubes free of charge!
Give and take - this is how deposit tubes work
The deposit tube is installed next to trash cans in city parks and other outdoor environments where there is a lot of movement. The empty can or PET bottle is placed in the deposit tube, and someone else takes it and deposits it in a deposit machine. Everyone wins!
Our research shows that a deposit package placed in a deposit tube rarely remains lying around for more than a few minutes before someone comes by and picks it up. The deposit tube can thus help to reduce litter around trash cans, reduce the cost of garbage disposal and increase recycling of cans and bottles.
